The Exhibition of FUSAKO KUYAMA "ART OF INTEGRATION"
English
The World of Integration by FUSAKO KUYAMA
I was brought up in the midst of Japanese culture and educated in western art, Japanese art and design. Not content with these traditional arts, I have earnestly continued to grope for my own original world of art, which is realized in the works
displayed in my New York exhibition. Zen, garden design, and an interior design approach which allows wider arrangement possibilities by use of fusuma and byobu (sliding doors and screens) that are found in Japanese culture, and its unique perspective and boundless thinking which engulfs even the viewers of the art to become an artist themselves, has brought me a fresh sense, and led me to create the theme of this exhibition,“integration”.
My motif comes from water and air, the environment which surrounds us. My work was inspired by nature not only in the mountains and rivers of my beloved home but also of North and South America, where I have lived, and of Africa and Europe, where I have traveled. Even if there are no concrete objects painted, there exists an universal language that allows everyone to relate to my work irrespective of background, offering a sense of healing. My past exhibitions have shown this - not only people from Japan but also Europe and South America have responded to and supported my work. I sincerely hope that this exhibition in New York is my special appeal to the world.
My works utilize several materials in layers. First comes Japanese washi paper on a square wooden panel, followed by watercolor, and I sometimes find gold or silver leaf to be effective. Using these materials without forcibly applying unnecessary processing to fully appreciate the natural quality of the materials themselves and listening to their voices to try to realize “integration” is enjoyable, and something that I think is similar to raising children.
Almost all my works are painted on square panels and composed of several pieces. Many of them have a twist which offer varying images if the pieces are rotated or arranged differently so that the viewers can wander into my world and actively enjoy my works.
In one sense, this is an integration of viewers and myself.
This aspect is greatly different from a conventional, one-way viewing of a painting.
Please come and experience my art in the integration exhibition.
